Of late there has been much hullabaloo over reservation in IITs.
The issue also landed up in our common lounge ( home to lukkha wingmates)
As the discussion became fiercer , I found myself getting engrossed into it.
I felt as if they are not as bad as has been projected in the media.
Though they are a reason to worry for the medics, but for iits , it should not be any cause of worry.
I fail to understand why the media is projecting it as if some calamity has befallen us.
Watching the 24*7 news channels makes me feel that.
I feel that what we see is the fury of the elite class, like a delhi mom cribbing over denial of his daughter's admission in a high repute institution because of reservation. What we dont see is the rock bottom - the landless farmer, the rickshaw wala , the unemployed.. What a biased sample size??
Go to them and ask what they have plans for their child. They would never have thought of . Because these live on a daily basis. They would want their child to do something which enables them to give them livelihood. NO GREAT PLANS, NO COUNSELING , NOTHING! And usually these jobs happen to be the same one that they are doing and like this the vicious circle goes on. Now for them , if a person of their community goes to iit , and comes out earning 50K a month, it would be like their ultimate fantasy. But that inspiration can come only when they see that their wards can also go to elite institutions. And their is when reservations help .
Encourage the poor to educate their children so that their children can also clear JEE and have control over their destiny . If IITs will not help in this task of nation building then who will?
IITs , i am sure, can handle this enormous intake of underperformers. this is because they are well equipped with great faculty, great facilities and comprehensive curriculum having practical significance.
People say quality of IIT will be diluted. They fear repute of IIT is at stake.
I think differently. These children are not of low iq. Its only because that they didnt get the kind of primary education we get. But even then they made it .It shows they are determined and willing to learn. So why not toil a little hard on them for nation's sake.
Repute of IITs goes only higher if they can show their commitment to the national upliftment task.
People are questioning the motives of govt in doing this. Clearly this is vote bank politics. But whats wrong with that. If some good thing is happening because of electoral motives , we shouldn't complain about that. Ofcourse, first strengthening up our primary school system and making the directive principle of free education to all a right would have better.
But all things in life are not perfect, are they?
If can help our masses by sacrificing a bit of our rights,is it too much to ask for??
